Why review your current credit card?
These days almost everybody has a credit card. They can be very useful but they can also be very expensive. You need to make sure that you are getting the best deal possible with your credit card. That’s why you need to review your current credit card from time to time. The wrong credit card can cost you a lot of money.
The main reason that you are going to want to review your current credit card is to make sure that you are getting the best interest rate possible. Most credit cards come with very high interest rates; you can save a lot of money if you can get a lower rate. Even if you only lower the rate on your card by a point or two the savings will add up. You do want to be careful about this however, you can’t jump from one card to another repeatedly or you going to hurt your credit. There are hundreds of different credit card options out there and that very well could result in your constantly applying for new cards. This is something you want to avoid. Generally it is best to review your current card once a year to see if you can get a better deal.
The other reason that you are going to want to review your current credit is to see if you can get one with lower fees. The fees on a credit card can vary dramatically. You are going to want to check to see if you can get a lower fee. You do however want to be careful; there is little value to getting a card with a lower annual fee if you end up paying substantially more in interest.
You may also want to review your credit card to see if you can get one that offers and incentive. Most cards offer incentive programs like air miles or cash back. These can be good programs to enroll in but again you have to be careful. You want to make sure that you don’t get a higher interest rate just to get more air miles. You also want to make sure that you will actually use the incentive. There is no point in collecting air miles if you are never going to use them.
If you do find a credit card that is better than the one you currently have you don’t necessarily need to change cards. It is possible to call up customer service at the company that issued your current card and ask them to give you a better deal. Often they will do this to retain you as a customer. The advantage of this is that by not opening a new account your credit will remain stronger. Obviously there is a possibility that your credit card company will say no and that point it probably is a good idea to change cards.
